Apple's Biggest Change in the iPod Lineup Ever

The annual fall music event is an Apple tradition dating back at least six years, in which the company typically rolls out new iPods in advance of the holiday shopping season. This year edition took place in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 1st 2010, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs announcing the music plans for the coming months. As expected, Apple refreshed its iPod lineup, unveiling redesigned versions of its iPod Touch, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle music players. The newly released iPods are available for pre-order now and start shipping on the week of September 6, 2010.

The new iPod Touch 4G gains the iPhone 4 Retina display, a 960x640 resolution, dual cameras, an A4 chip, and supports FaceTime video chat. Prices of the new iPod Touch range from $229 to $399. The new iPod Nano 6G loses its camera functionality and screen size, but gains its first multitouch screen with 240x240 resolution. The new iPod Shuffle 4G has shrunk down in height but gets back the physical playback controls on the front of the device.

iPod Touch 4G New Features

The fourth generation iPod Touch is slimmer and is adopting more iPhone-like features. The new device adopts Apple’s high-pixel-density Retina display technology, giving it a display with a 960x640 resolution which is four times as many pixels as the previous models. Another feature is the addition of front-facing and rear-facing cameras. The front-facing VGA camera support Apple’s FaceTime video-chatting technology for chatting with both other iPod Touch 4G owners and iPhone 4 owners. The higher-resolution rear-facing camera allows for snapping pictures and HD video recording, which will allow users to run the mobile version of iMovie. The new device also gets an A4 chip of its own, which will boost the battery life to 40 hours of audio playback and seven hours of video playback. Finally, it features the same 3-axis gyroscope as the iPhone 4, allowing for faster and cleaner-looking apps and games, especially with iOS 4.1 being installed in the new device. Apple’s new Game Center software will also enhance multiplayer gaming. Games played a central part in Apple’s iPod Touch 4G demonstration. Steve Jobs noted that 1.5 billion games have been downloaded from the App Store onto the iPod Touch alone; outselling both Nintendo and Sony worldwide in the portable gaming market.

Steve Jobs offered few details during the new iPod Touch presentation on how a device without a phone number like this one will be able to place calls to other devices. There is a new FaceTime app, which you use to initiate FaceTime calls via e-mail addresses. You enter e-mail addresses in the FaceTime settings, and then people can call you and you can call them via the FaceTime app or the Contacts app. There is a microphone on the new iPod Touch so you do not have to put on headphones to use FaceTime. It is located on the bottom edge of the device. The iPod Touch 4G is available on the week of September 6, 2010, in three versions: 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.

iPod Touch 4G versus iPod Touch 3G

The fourth generation iPod Touch is closer to being an "iPhone without the phone" than ever before, but its camera can only capture 960x720 pixel images, while the iPhone 4 can take 1936x2592 pixel images. As for the third generation iPod Touch, its successor is miles ahead in several areas. The iPod Touch 4G has 960x640 pixel resolution, while iPod Touch 3G has half that at 480x320 pixel. The new iPod Touch is equipped with Apple's 1GHz A4 processor, while the older iPod Touch processor speed was estimated to be about 600MHz. The figure below captures the main features of the iPod Touch 4G as compared to the iPod Touch 3G. Credit should be given to PCWorld website.

You may want to protect your device from scratches with an ultra thin and durable ipod touch 4g screen protector. For a bargain price of about $7 plus free shipping (something the other competitors cannot give you), how can you lose?
