The annual fall music event is an Apple tradition dating back at least six years, in which the company typically rolls out new iPods in advance of the holiday shopping season. This year edition took place in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 1st 2010, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs announcing the music plans for the coming months. As expected, Apple refreshed its iPod lineup, unveiling redesigned versions of its iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch, and iPod Nano music players. The newly released iPods are available for pre-order now and start shipping on the week of September 6, 2010.

The new iPod Shuffle 4G has shrunk down in height but gets back the physical playback controls on the front of the device. Apple has dropped the 4GB model from the fourth generation iPod Shuffle, and is now offering only the 2GB model at $49, which comes in five brilliant colors. The new iPod Touch 4G gains the iPhone 4 Retina display, a 960x640 resolution, dual cameras, an A4 chip, and supports FaceTime video chat. The new iPod Nano 6G loses its camera functionality and screen size, but gains its first multitouch screen with 240x240 resolution.

The second generation iPod Shuffle, the tiny rectangle with circular buttons on its face and a built-in clip, was a big hit for Apple. However, the third generation model, which took off the buttons and added VoiceOver and playlists, was a step back. During Apple’s Event, Steve Jobs mentioned that "people clearly missed the buttons, so they loved the buttons of the second generation, but they loved VoiceOver and having playlists from the third”. So, Apple made the best of both generations to create a really small fourth generation iPod Shuffle with buttons, VoiceOver, and playlists.

The fourth generation iPod Shuffle has the following features:

• Playlists is the perfect mix for every mood. You can sync playlists, audiobooks, podcasts, and other audio files in iTunes on your computer to the new iPod Shuffle, and play the perfect mix for whatever mood strikes you.
• Genius Mixes, which automatically create mixes from songs in your music library. Activate Genius in iTunes on your computer, and it automatically finds songs that sound great together. Then it creates Genius Mixes, which you can easily sync to the new iPod Shuffle.

The new iPod Shuffle 4G regains its large physical playback buttons to the front of the device that have been completely eliminated in the iPod Shuffle 3G.
