Apple's Biggest Change in the iPod Lineup Ever
The annual fall music event is an Apple tradition dating back at least six years, in which the company typically rolls out new iPods in advance of the holiday shopping season. This year edition took place in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 1st 2010, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs announcing the music plans for the coming months. As expected, Apple refreshed its iPod lineup, unveiling redesigned versions of its iPod Nano, iPod Touch, and iPod Shuffle music players. The newly released iPods are available for pre-order now and start shipping on the week of September 6, 2010.
The new iPod Nano 6G gets its first buttonless multitouch display with 240x240 resolution and multiple home screens, a built-in clip, and half the weight of the previous model. However, the screen size is shrunk while the built-in camera is gone, so the new device loses its video playback and recording capabilities. The new iPod Touch 4G gains the iPhone 4 Retina display, a 960x640 resolution, dual cameras, an A4 chip, and supports FaceTime video chat. The new iPod Shuffle 4G has shrunk down in height but gets back the physical playback controls on the front of the device.

iPod Nano 6G Features
During its many lives, the iPod Nano design has been all over the place. It was super tall, then it was fat, then it was thin with a bigger screen, and the 5th generation has a video camera. During Apple’s Event, Steve Jobs mentioned that “the iPod Nano has been super popular” and asked "how do we make this better?"
The iPod Nano 6G has the following new features:
- Apple eliminated the click wheel and instead made the music player multitouch-based. The multitouch screen has a 1.54 inch (diagonal) color TFT display with 240x240 pixel resolution.
- Multiple home screens, each capable of holding up to four icons. You can rearrange the icons on your home screen by tapping and dragging them, so your music is organized just how you like. You can swipe the home screen to browse your music by songs, albums, artists, playlists, genres, or composers.
- Built-in clip making the new iPod Nano portable and wearable. For your run, walk, dance, or trip to the gym, this little Nano goes a long way. You can clip it to your sleeve, jacket, or running shorts and control your favorite music with just a tap or swipe of a finger, so you can stay focused without fumbling around.
- It is 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter than the iPod Nano 5G.
In addition, the sixth generation iPod Nano still has the following features:
- VoiceOver Technology that supports 29 languages. VoiceOver is the world's first gesture-based screen reader in which you touch the screen to hear a description of the item under your finger: the name of the song, artist, and album.
- Genius, the Music Mixmaster. If you like a song and want to stay in the mood, just tap the Genius icon and it finds other songs on your device that go great together, then it generates a Genius playlist for you. You can also create Genius Mixes in iTunes and sync the ones you like to your iPod Nano, then tap the Genius Mixes icon and rediscover songs you have not heard in a while, or find music you forgot you even had. Moreover, the Genius sidebar recommends new music based on the songs you already love. You can listen to a free 30-second preview, and click once to buy a song which starts downloading instantly. This is the fastest, easiest way to build a digital music collection for your new iPod Nano.
- Shake to Shuffle to a randomly-selected song in your music library, which is perfect when you are not in any particular music mood. You never know what you are going to hear, and you will always be pleasantly surprised.
- An FM radio tuner that shows the artist, song, or program you are listening to. Just tap to see the radio controls, flick the radio dial to change stations, and tap to set your favorites.
- A pedometer, which makes the iPod Nano the ideal exercise partner. It keeps track of your steps and helps you meet your fitness goals. You can create a daily step goal and check your progress when you upload all your data to the Nike+ website.
- It supports the Nike + iPod Sport Kit (sold separately) that keeps you motivated from warm-up to cool-down on your run or in the gym. You will watch the miles unfold and hear real-time voice feedback along with your favorite songs. In the gym, connect your device to a Nike + iPod compatible cardio machine. It records your pace, time, and distance as you work out.
- The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery gives you up to 24 hours of nonstop music on a single charge.
- Physical volume buttons, a 30-pin dock connector to USB cable, and a headphone jack.
However, the sixth generation iPod Nano loses the following feature:
- The built-in camera that was introduced to the iPod Nano 5G, which means that users will not be able to snap pictures, record or watch videos with the new device. Apple is positioning this iPod Nano 6G entirely as a music device.
The new iPod Nano 6G features anodized aluminum finish in seven bright colors that makes this new design even more brilliant. It comes in graphite, silver, pink, blue, yellow, green, and a Product Red version. It is available in two capacities: an 8GB model for $149 and a 16GB model for $179.

iPod Nano 6G versus iPod Nano 5G
The new iPod Nano 6G loses in camera functionality and size, but it gains the first multitouch screen with 240x240 pixel resolution. The new display is much smaller than the iPod Nano 5G at 1.54 inches (diagonal) versus 2.2 inches. But the new Nano makes up for the smaller screen with improved 220 ppi density over the previous Nano of 204 ppi. Pricing remains the same. The figure below captures the main features of the iPod Nano 6G as compared to the iPod Nano 5G. Credit should be given to PCWorld website.
